Country reported: Argentina

The Nahuel Huapí pterosaur was a cryptid reported once, from Lago Nahuel Huapí in Argentina. In the 19th Century two hunters, Milacsek and Shirdos, shot a pelican-like bird or reptile with leathery skin that flew away from a cave.[1]

Ulrich Dunkel wrote that the animal was left with the National Museum of Natural History in Santiago, Chile (founded in 1830), but was lost during one of the subsequent civil wars that Chile went through.[2] Hans Krieg wrote that only the head was retrieved, and was discarded after three days, as it turned out to belong to a flying steamerduck (Tachyeres patachonicus).[3]

Lago Nahuel Huapí is also home to the lake monster nahuelito.[1]
